They use cars as a tool of arousal, in which orgasm is directly connected to death-defying temptations of fate at high speeds. Ballard wrote his book to illustrate the connections between sex and technology–the ultimate postmodern melding of flesh and machine–and Cronenberg takes this theme to the final frontier of sexual expression. Holly Hunter, James Spader, and Deborah Unger are utterly fearless in roles that few actors would dare to play, and their surrender to Cronenberg’s vision makes Crash an utterly uniqu and challenging film experience. In the closing paragraph of his 1996 review of Dragonheart, noted critic Roger Ebert summed up this adventurous fantasy quite nicely: “While no reasonable person over the age of 12 would presumably be able to take it seriously, there is nevertheless a lighthearted joy to it, a cheerfulness, an insouciance, that recalls the days when movies were content to be fun.” That’s precisely the quality that makes Dragonheart so appealing, despite the fact that it didn’t exactly take flight and breathe fire at the box office. The movie takes itself seriously without sacrificing the wit and cleverness that make it so entertaining. It’s about the last of the great dragon slayers, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), who teams up with the last of the great dragons, Draco (and voiced by Sean Connery), after they realize that killing each other would put them both out of business! So they devise a bogus dragon-slaying act that’s a huge hit as they tour from village to village. Later, they must rouse the peasantry against the loutish Prince Einon (David Thewlis), whose life was once saved by Draco, but who now violates the “Old Code” of honor with a ruthless reign of terror. As Ebert rightly noted, Dragonheart is no masterpiece, and its story (which was originally conceived as a darker, more serious drama) isn’t likely to capture everyone’s heart (dragon or otherwise). But it’s full of exciting action, witty dialogu, and gallant heroism, and in the presentation of a realistic talking dragon it’s a milestone in computer-generated special effects, far surpassing the breakthroughs of Jurassic Park three years earlier. –Jeff Shannon.

Dustin Hoffman plays a lowlife who happens upon a plane crash and rescus the passengers, but doesn’t really care about the valu of his deed or the attendant publicity when the media starts searching for the hero. Another fellow (Andy Garcia) steps into the gap and claims credit, and as his life changes for the better he takes on a messianic glow. Geena Davis is the cynical television reporter who pushes the latter’s fame in order to keep her story alive, and this film, directed by Stephen Frears (Prick Up Your Ears), takes a few familiar jabs at a manipulative and voyeuristic press. This is essentially an unofficial remake of Meet John Doe, though it is less dramatic and forceful in the end than Frank Capra’s classic. Chevy Chase has an oddly anachronistic part as Davis’s editor (maybe he thought he really was in Meet John Doe), but the film belongs to Hoffman, who makes his character a slightly cleaned-up version of the actor’s own Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy. –Tom Keogh

Angelina Jolie’s strong-willed performance in Foxfire as Legs, the charismatic outsider based on the rebellious character from Joyce Carol Oates’s novel, is a very good reason to see this 1996 drama. The film updates the story from the 1950s to the ’90s, but for a while the air of teenage angst and confrontation is closer to the legacy of James Dean than gun-toting/body-piercing disaffection. Bold and larger-than-life, Legs quickly gathers a group of adolescent girls around her, each of whom has been sexually abused and is dealing in her own way with the emotional consequnces. As expected, the girls plot out their revenge, but even more interesting is the intensity of their bond and rituals, the way they hang out in an abandoned house, their expressions of devotion. So tight and self-protective does this cliqu become that onlookers–fellow students, parents–become resentful. The final act loses faith somewhat with the mystiqu of this story, as a few hoary ideas (kidnapping, firearms) breach the film’s originality. But what’s good is good indeed, and Jolie’s performance remains a harbinger of great things to come. –Tom Keogh
